They were attracted to the magnet so they were metals. So there may be copper in the sand as well. I have malaysian trumpet snails which are rather resistant to copper, but I am worried about my ghost shrimp.

I'd worry that there's also coatings and/or additives to either the steel and/or copper which will become evident when you melt. For example, if you melt down aluminum cans or other low-grade aluminum, you get loads of impurities and crap floating in your metal.
