Spherulitic Graphite Cast Iron Process

Understanding Cast Irons
The iron is cast as a white iron of a suitable chemical composition. After the castings are removed from the mold, they are given an extended heat treatment starting at a temperature above 1650F (900C). This causes the iron carbide to dissociate and the free carbon precipitates in the solid iron as graphite.

5.2 This method defines a procedure for measuring the number of nodules and the quality of nodularity of spherulitic graphite in a cast iron microstructure. The specimen’s location in a casting or cast test specimen, and the orientation of the plane-of-polish, are governed by product standards.

Cast iron - Wikipedia
Cast iron is made from pig iron, which is the product of smelting iron ore in a blast furnace. Cast iron can be made directly from the molten pig iron or by re-melting pig iron, often along with substantial quantities of iron, steel, limestone, carbon (coke) and taking various steps to remove undesirable contaminants.

Heat Treatment of Cast Irons - Heat Treat Doctor
Nodular iron, also known as ductile iron or spheroidal graphite iron, is cast iron in which the graphite is present as tiny balls, or spherulites, instead of graphite flakes (as in gray iron), or compacted aggregates (as in malleable iron). The nodular irons typi-cally contain from 3.2-4.1% C, 1.8-2.8% Si and up to 0.80% Mn as major constituents.
